A Walk Across Michigan Booklog
In a Walk Across Michigan I mentioned the book Paddle to the Sea:
Paddle to the Sea, by Holling C. Holling, was one of my boyhood favorites. It’s the story of a young Indian boy who carves a little man in a 12-inch canoe that he names Paddle-to-the Sea. He sets the canoe off on a journey from the snowy banks of a river on the Canadian side of Lake Superior and it travels through the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River and finally the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way there are dangers and adventures and each time Paddle-to-the-Sea appears to have come to the end of his voyage, a kind stranger picks him up, reads the words carved on its side, “Put me back in the water. I am Paddle-to-the-Sea,” and gently sends it back out into the world.
At the end of the story, years later, the young Indian boy, now a man, learns that his little boat is the subject of a newspaper story and has made a journey all the way to France . . .
This is my first book and, as I shove it off, like a little piece of twig into the torrent of words rushing headlong into the river of literature, I bid it farewell and wish it a joyous journey of adventure. Be strong, my little baby book. Watch out for the haters and bandersnatches. Make the Long Journey. Ride the raging rapids. Sail the bountiful seas to exotic ports of call. Return to me laden with stories and riches from your voyages.
Ok. I don’t know about you, but that’s about as maudlin as I can stand.
Like the little boy in Paddle-to-the-Sea, however, I would very much like to know where my little book wanderer has been to, so I created a special “Booklog,” where I can track its journeys and you can follow the progress of it, too, if you want. I think it will be fun to watch. You can add your details by clicking the button below.

Your descriptions of the little towns, stores, campgrounds, etc. made me feel I truly was following in your footsteps all the way. Thank you for the humor (we need a lot more of that these days!) and thank you for the detailed historical info on so many topics. I especially enjoyed reading about the ice industry and the man who worked so hard to get ice down to the islands; I remember the description Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote in Farmer Boy when the French Canadian men came to cut the ice from the frozen lake or river for Almonzo’s parents’ ice house. I hate to admit it (although you made me admit it twice in the registrations!) that I am old enough to remember the ice man delivering a block of ice every few days to my neighbors next door. Thanks for giving your readers lots of research reading to do to learn more about these interesting topics. I think we may just do some hiking once again! I am delighted I can share book #31 with someone now. The best of everything to you!!|
