A Walk Across Michigan on the Michigan Shore to Shore Trail
By Will Swartz

Hey! Thanks for stopping by.

There's a trail that crosses from one side of Michigan to the other, called the Michigan Shore To Shore Riding And Hiking Trail (STS).

The STS travels through some of the prettiest parts of Michigan and, for the most part, it is little known and hiked, though there are a number of trail rides each year organized by an equestrian group, called the Michigan Trail Riders Association (MTRA).

I spent 19 days hiking the trail from Oscoda, on the Lake Huron side of the state, to Lake Michigan, where the trail ends in Empire. I didn't see a single person on the trail in those 19 days.

This book was inspired by that trip, but is really more than just my hiker's day journal. There's a whole chapter, for example, about the history of the ice trade and the part that Michigan played.

Another about the lumber industry. And then there is fishing---I love fishing!

I wrote this book to take you with me on a virtual hike of this gorgeous trail (even if it's just from your favorite reading spot) so, lace up your boots and let's hike!

 Endless summer!

A Walk Across Michigan is an interactive virtual hike across scenic Michigan, with creative and fascinating historical detours. A school teacher/librarian/administrator takes you on a 19-day trek from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan on the Michigan Shore To Shore Trail (STS).
(A Walk Across Michigan is NOT a trail guide for the STS. Readers interested in hiking the trail should see the information below about Trail Maps for the Shore To Shore.)

What Readers Say:

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved it!
I purchased the paper back and the e-book. Just one of those books where I'll read it several times over and is perfect while sitting around the campfire!!

"An entertaining and informative account of one of Michigan's lesser known gems."

5.0 out of 5 stars Who knew you could have so much fun hiking a trail vicariously?

This is NOT your grandfather's or father's type of hiking book. This tale, told by a top rated story teller, is full of funnys and charms. Not a single yawn moment to be found.

Take a journey with Will and you will definitely learn something and smile while you do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great read!

Ordered Walk Across Michigan, delivered to me on Monday evening. Began the book yesterday and finished it this morning. What a great read!!!

I'm a life long hiker as well as a horse lover/trail rider so this was a perfect treat for me! I love the way Will combines hitting the trail with Michigan history and really appreciate his sense of humor! I totally recommend this book ! Even if you are not a hiker you will enjoy it.. Can't wait for Will to share his next adventure! And.. I'm already planning my trip to hike the STS late this summer! Thanks Will : )))

Love this review! (I have haters!)

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment

This book is a complete sham, not a book about hiking in so much as an author with a self-absorbed notion to be published and tell his odd life story. Huge disappointment.

P.S. This book is NOT a trail guide for the Shore To Shore Trail. Check out the maps if you're looking for hiking information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!

Once I started reading this fun and informative book, it got in my head and I could hardly put it down! I love to walk for health, both physical and mental, so this book appealed to me.

WIll's sense of humor, creative imagination, research notes and storytelling talent worked well together to write this book about his 19 day hike shore to shore in Northern Michigan, my favorite place to visit.

I loved reading about his family's part in his endeavor! I hope he writes more books!

Riders and Hikers who are planning to ride or hike the Michigan Shore to Shore Riding and Hiking Trail will appreciate the detail and information in a new set of trail maps for the Shore to Shore Trail.

The maps feature 15 individual 4" x 8" map panels that are printed on heavy duty 14 lb. coated paper to make them weather resistant. Each panel highlights a 1 or 2 day section of the Michigan Shore to Shore Trail and has 2 sides.

The front side includes map information including major roads, lakes, rivers, towns, campgrounds, horse camps, watering stops, and other landmarks. The backside of each panel includes a detailed narrative of a trail section with information about resupply points, camping alternatives, warnings, trail descriptions and other important information to make it easy for hikers and horseback riders to navigate the STS.
A optional plastic pouch and dual use lanyard make the maps easy to carry and access on the trail and provide even more protection from the elements.
